Design

My approach to design could be considered an alternative. With The Chronicle being an online-only publication, published via our WordPress site, there have been limited opportunities for me to delve into traditional design. But, I have still attempted to incorporate design elements into my own stories and the layouts of stories I have edited and formatted through the use of different fonts and text styles as well as photo organization. I have also designed several art pieces during The Chronicle's events that we have hosted throughout this past school year.

Website Design

One of the main ways I have utilized design in my stories can be seen in my story January 6th, 2021; One Year Since the Capitol Insurrection. Within this story, I used a timeline format to recount the exact events of that day, while also including specific details. I also introduced an extended metaphor about democracy being symbolized through a flame. I distinguished this metaphor by italicizing its portion of the test. I also bolded the specific timeline, while leaving the included details in regular font. My main goal with this design was to create contrast reality from the world of metaphor, while also making the distinction obvious.

Another way that I aided in website design this year was designing the formatting of many stories by including photos throughout the story to breakup the formatting and add more visual interest to the story's design. One example of this was in our Bounce Back:  2022 Football Season Recap story. While I did not write this story, I formatted and posted it, as well as included my photography and determined the photos placement within the post.

Poster & Shirt Designs

For the past 2 years I have been an editor, I have designed several posters to increase our outreach to the Grandview Community. I particularly designed flyers and buisness cards for our 8th Grade Welcome Night. I also designed our freshman welcome letter for this year, and our team shirts.

Chronicle Event Designs

For Halloween this year The Chronicle hosted our largest school event ever as we took over hosting our school's annual Trick or Treat Street where elementary age students come through the school and collect candy from various club tables. We also then hosted a movie night after the event for the high school students where we played The Nightmare Before Christmas. For The Chronicle's table, I designed a wall art installation complete with our logo and also aided the rest of our staff in decorating/designing the events' decor throughout our lower commons and academic hallway.
